Middle School

MWE runs from UTK–6th grade. Other LAUSD elementary schools, our resident students do not have one obvious "feeder" school for middle school and high school. As a result, resident MWE families often utilize LAUSD's CHOICES system.

If your child is in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade and you plan on staying in LAUSD for middle school—but perhaps not attending your assigned resident schoolvisit the district's CHOICES page to review your options.

You may apply through the Choices application online, which opens in October 2024 for the 2025–26 school year. Here is the CHOICES timeline for this current school year (2023–24), to give you an idea of the process.

Magnet Programs

A popular choice for MWE families is to apply to magnet programs via CHOICES. To do so, your child can acquire points in order to be eligible. Each school year you apply and do not receive a spot, you acquire points that you can bank and use for the middle school application when the time comes.

PROTIP #1

Points expire after three years so, if you want to start your child in Middle School

  • as a 6th grader (and leave MWE a year early), it's wise to start applying when your child is in 2nd grade
  • as a 7th grader, it's wise to start applying when your child is in 3rd grade

Accruing Points

One strategy parents utilize is to apply to a schools that are difficult to get into. If your child is not offered a spot or is waitlisted in one of these in-demand schools, you'll acquire a certain amount of points for that school year's application. Of course, if your child is offered a spot and you don’t accept it, you will lose your points.

Additional points are collected if your local/home school is a PHBAO school or Overcrowded. As of the 2022/2023 school year, Mt. Washington Elementary school is a NON-PHBAO school and is NOT Overcrowded. *Those students that attend MWE through one of the many permits offered through the district will have a different local/home school and may qualify to acquire these PHABAO and/or Overcrowded points.

Again, the points do expire after 3 years, so it is advised to begin accruing points starting in 2nd-3rd grade depending on when your child plans to begin middle school.
