Programs and Events
MWPTA hosts a wide range of fun, community-building events for students and their families throughout the year. We also offer after-school programming from a variety of sources including our own Mt. Washington community.
AFTER-SCHOOL CARE
These three on-campus after-school care options MWE are available from the dismissal bell until 6 pm on school days.
- STAR Galaxy is a monthly tuition-based program open to UTK and up. It is a structured program, with students broken out by grades. Register here by selecting Mt. Washington Elementary and Galaxy. Contact MWE site director Ms. Gil at lucitag@starinc.org for more information.
- Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP), a free, structured program with mixed-grade classes, and is open to UTK and up. Contact Ms. Denise at denisev@starinc.org for more information.
- Beyond the Bell, a free program with less structure, is only open to students in Grades 2–6.
A popular off-site aftercare program is the After-School Club, operated by The LA Department of Parks and Recreation at the Carlin G. Smith Recreation Center. A paid program, Carlin G. staff picks students up from MWE at dismissal, and parents must pick up by 5:30pm. Please check their website for additional information.
AFTER-SCHOOL ENRICHMENT
In addition to after school care, MWPTA offers a variety of enrichment classes.
Here is the list of both community member-led and professional after-school enrichment providers:
• HAWKs LA
• Radical Cooks
• Let's Knit with Que
• Parker-Anderson*
• STAR NOVA
*Professional after-school enrichment provider, Parker-Anderson, brings a staff of highly trained instructors and intellectually stimulating classes to students in a fun and exciting way! Classes offered through Parker-Anderson are coordinated by MWPTA, but registration and payment is through their website. You can learn more about Parker-Anderson at www.parker-anderson.org and find their flyer on our Enrichment Classes page.
Community member-led classes are also available for our students. We have an incredibly talented neighborhood and many parents and friends are eager to share their knowledge and skills with MWE kids. Each instructor provides their own registration and payment instructions.
Please check the Enrichment Classes page for information on classes and registration for the 2024-2025 school year.
If you are interested in expanding our offerings or teaching a class, please contact Sarah Rothbard at programs@mwpta.org.
PLEASE NOTE: If your child is not enrolled in STAR Galaxy, ELOP, or Beyond the Bell and will be attending classes after school, you are responsible for picking up your child at dismissal and taking them to their enrichment classes.
Visit After School Enrichment Classes for the latest schedule.
FUN and FREE
Join the MWPTA throughout the year for engaging activities designed to stimulate our students' curiosities, provide social-emotional opportunities, and support parents and families with expert presentations and workshops.
Though it is hard to imagine, all our students will eventually go on to Middle School. MWPTA hosts an annual Middle School Fair with resources and information to support our families. Our Middle School Fair will be held in October in the MPR!
Stargazing Event: In the past, MWPTA partnered with astronomer volunteers from the Los Angeles Astronomical Society to answer questions and help the budding astronomers among us get a look at some sparkling celestial bodies. We're hoping to bring this event back. Check back for more information.
ARTS COLLECTIVE AFTER SCHOOL (ACAS)
One Friday a month, the PTA provides an on-campus after-school art workshop for the kids led by local artists. All students are welcome, and parents too! Click here for more info.
As of 11/4/24
