Books + Kids Who Love Books = Happiness

The Literati Spring Book Fair is Coming March 6–14. Hosted by MWPTA

To ensure every student has the opportunity to participate, we’ve created a schedule that allows for easy browsing and purchasing while following LAUSD’s rule that book sales are ONLY permitted during recess, lunch, and after school.

Literati Spring Book Fair • March 6–14

Previews begin March 6

What to bring on your purchase day:

Here's what your kids need to bring back when it's their turn to buy:

    • 📝 Wishlist so they know what they're getting. After you tally up approved books for purchase, remember to add the 9.5% Los Angeles sales tax!

    • 💰 Form of payment. We only accept cash or a Literati gift card

    • 🛍️ Reusable grocery bag from home (optional) — we also have cute Literati book bags available for .89¢

If you choose to buy a Literati Gift card, just write the recipient’s name + gift card balance on your child’s wishlist. Volunteers will be able to look it up on site.

If you send cash, exact change is appreciated. For younger kids, it's good to put it in a ziplock with their name.

Did your kid forget to write down the price? Can't decipher the book title? Check out the full book and price list (which includes all those little tchotchkes on their wish list) below.

How does the Literati Book Fair work at MWE?

To ensure that every student has the opportunity to participate, we've created a schedule that allows for easy browsing and purchasing while following LAUSD's rule that book sales are ONLY permitted during recess, lunch, and after school.

📖 Classroom Previews: During their regularly scheduled library time, students will have the opportunity to browse the book fair and work with parent volunteers to create a wish list of books they’d love to take home. Students may also preview through their after-school programs and some designated recess and lunch times.

📝 Creating a Wish List: With the help of volunteers during classroom previews, students will create wish lists bring home.

🏠 Wish List Sent Home: Ask your student to share their wish list with you, review the list together, then provide funds via Literati gift card or cash for purchases. You can also review the available books and merchandise here, in the virtual book fair.

💳 Purchasing Books: Each class will be assigned a specific time during recess, lunch, or after school to return and buy books, based on their preview date. Starting Wednesday, March 12, after most classes have had a chance to preview, book sales will be open to all students.

By structuring the fair this way, we can accommodate all students while keeping the experience exciting and accessible. Thank you for your support—we can’t wait to celebrate the joy of reading with our school community!

Volunteering

how do i get 20% off my purchase?

Volunteer: visit sign up genius today!

what do volunteers do?

The Literati Book Fair is a community effort, and it takes a village of enthusiastic volunteers to run it! We have lots of shifts still available, and volunteers:

  • Help students, especially our TK and Kinders, put together their wish lists during classroom previews
  • Run the cash register* during recess, lunch, and after school
  • Load-in and break-down the book fair (March 5 and March 17, respectively)

Oh, and did you know that volunteers receive 20% off every book order? (Just check the box on your kid’s wish list)Thank you in advance! What is the difference between the two volunteer types on sign up genius?

*To run the cash register, you must be a member of the PTA. Not a member? Join today for only $9.

why are there two types of volunteers on sign up genius?

There are two types Volunteer slots on Sign Up Genius:

Vols: LAUSD-cleared are slotted during a classroom's regularly scheduled library time to help kids put together a "wish list" to send home. Because this occurs during instructional time, volunteers need to be cleared by LAUSD. (Not a Tier II volunteer? You can still volunteer during snack, lunch, and after school) Parent help is especially important when grades TK-1 preview the book fair.

General volunteers come during lunch, snack, or after school to help facilitate previews and sales for our after school programs/parents or set-up/break down the book fair.

Book Fair

why are some books only available online?

A handful of books—especially Scholastic titles like Dogman and Baby Sitters Club—are exclusive to our Virtual Book Fair, so they will not be available at the in-person book store. At the same time, some books available in-person may not be online. If your child wants a book that's been "sold out" between their preview and purchase date, we can order it for them at the register! It will arrive in a few weeks.

my kid forgot to write the title/price on their wishlist! What can i do?

You can look up the book title + price here.

are you only selling books?

*Only* books?! We've got fiction and non-fiction; easy-reader and chapter books; graphic novels and activity books across a wide range of subjects—from animals and nature, to gaming and sci-fi, history to mystery, well-loved characters to new heroes and heroines.
We'll also have a selection of kid-favorite tchotchkes like fun pens, journals, and posters.

Literati Gift Card + Payment

what types of payment do you accept at the book fair?

We accept Literati Gift Cards and cash. After you tally up approved books for purchase, please remember to add the 9.5% Los Angeles sales tax!

how do literati gift cards work? do i have to print a receipt for my kid? what if i have a balance from last year?

After you purchase your Literati Gift card online and receive a confirmation email, simply the recipient’s name + gift card balance on your child’s Wish List. Volunteers will be able to look it up on site.

If Literati emailed you to say you have a balance on a gift card then hooray! Consider that a gift from the past you. You can clear that balance by using it at the Virtual Book Fair today or your child can use it in person. NOTE: Literati doesn’t allow you to reload a gift card; you can simply purchase another one for this year’s books. (And yes, it can be under the same name!)

Scheduling

why do "previews" and "purchases" at all? why not "purchases" all the time?

LAUSD limits book sales during recess, lunch, and after school. Those are limited windows for ~400 students, so we’ve set up a “preview” for classes to browse the book fair during their regularly-scheduled library time—and an assigned “purchase” time for a class to return.
Starting Wednesday, March 12, after most classes have had a chance to preview, book sales will be open to all students. This system prioritizes our youngest students while also helping to manage crowds by providing dedicated classroom browsing and purchase times..

how are you going to enforce return times?

To keep the process organized, students will need both their wish list and payment to enter the library during their assigned purchase time. Wish lists will also include their designated return time, helping to streamline the experience and reduce crowds. We hope this system makes the process smoother and more efficient for everyone!
